Mechanical Estimator

Purpose of the Role


The Mechanical Estimator is responsible for preparing competitive and technically robust cost estimates for 

mechanical building-services projects. Working under the guidance of the Design & Estimating Senior Manager, 

the role ensures all estimates reflect accurate quantities, validated designs, supplier inputs, and risk allowances 

through to project handover, to achieve the business units’ annual targets. 


Key Responsibilities


Estimating & Pricing

o Prepare detailed mechanical take-offs from drawings and specifications.

o Price labour, materials, and plant in accordance with tender strategy.

o Build prelims, risk allowances, and value-engineering options.

o Develop and maintain benchmarking data to support pricing consistency.


Supplier & Subcontractor Engagement

o Issue RFQs, analyse quotations, and recommend supplier/subcontractor selections.

o Validate design intent and perform mechanical calculations (cable sizing, load assessments, 

containment selection, etc.) where required.


Tender Documentation & Handover

o Draft tender clarifications, exclusions, and assumptions.

o Assist in developing prelims inputs, tender programs, and risk/opportunity logs.

o Prepare the priced BOQ, quotes file, and scope summary for handover to Delivery.

Collaboration

o Work closely with Mechanical & Electrical Estimators, Designers, and the Commercial & 

Controls team to ensure alignment across disciplines.

o Ensure technical compliance with industry standards.


Travel

o Willing and able to travel to client and prospect sites.

o Occasionally willing to stay away from home overnight when required


Required Skills & Experience

Proven estimating experience within mechanical building services and working in this capacity for a 

minimum of 5 years.

Understanding of mechanical systems design and installation (HVAC, public health, LTHW/CHW, 

domestic services, etc).

Strong analytical and numerical skills with attention to detail.

Familiarity with estimating software and cost databases.

Knowledge of industry standards and building regulations.

HNC/HND or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services.

Performance Measures

Accuracy and competitiveness of tender submissions.

Quality and compliance of take-offs, pricing, and supporting documentation.

Timeliness of deliverables and quality of handover to Operations.

Contribution to team collaboration and continuous improvement
